Biographical / Historical
Marie Kopach Gleason was born in 1924, the oldest child of Olga and Michael Kopach, in Fargo, North Dakota. Her sisters were Betty Kopach Stensgard and Lorraine Kopach. She attended Sacred Heart Academy in Fargo, North Dakota, and went to college, first at Concordia College in Moorhead, then the University of Minnesota where she received a Bachelor of Arts, focusing on Journalism, graduating in 1946. She would briefly work at the Minneapolis Tribune where she interviewed Hubert Humphrey.
Marie would meet her husband, Thomas Patrick Gleason, at a dance mixer near the University of Minnesota. They got married in Fargo. Through the years, Marie and Tom would live in Alabama, Georgia, and Wyoming. They would eventually move to Wayzata, Minnesota were Tom taught and Marie would write journalism pieces. Then they moved overseas to France and Germany where Tom worked for the Department of Defense. Through several moves, both in the United States and abroad, Marie and Tom would have four children, Julie Gleason-Comstock, Jessica Hoppe, John Gleason, and Thomas Gleason. In their final move, Tom and Marie moved to St. John’s Newfoundland. Thomas Gleason passed away in 2010. Following Tom’s death, Marie would move to Windsor, Ontario to be closer to her children. Marie died, May 3, 2019.
