History

Buxton, North Dakota is a small town of around 320 people located in Traill County. It was founded in 1880 as Buxton Township as a site along the route of the Great Northern Railroad. It was finally named a city in 1967 after the North Dakota state legislature passed legislation eliminating all existing incorporation titles.

The town is named after Thomas J. Buxton who was a city treasurer in Minneapolis, Minnesota and close friend of the town’s founder, Budd Reeve.
