Biographical / Historical

The International Coalition for Land/Water Stewardship in the Red River Drainage Basin was founded in 1983 after the first International Water Summit Conference in December of 1983. It stated its purpose as the pursuit of better methods of funding for environmental conservation utilizing the “Manitoba League of Municipalities,” “Red River Valley Mayors and Reeves Association,” “North Dakota League of Cities,” “Minnesota League of Cities,” and other various organizations. Its second goal was to give a larger scope to the education that was being given to the general public about water conservancy and how the citizens of the Red River Valley could better protect their resources. It had an especially strong outreach to farmers, being that agriculture dominates the valley. They were successful in gathering many influential leaders from the Minnesota, North Dakota in the United States and Manitoba in Canada. Eventually the organization was absorbed along with the Red River Basin Board, and the Red River Water Resources Council, into the new Red River Basin Commission and North Chapter, in 2002.
