Biographical / Historical

Theodore Holton was born in Norway on July 3, 1850 and came to the states with his parents in 1853, settling in Rock County, Wisconsin. He went to school in Grant County, Wisconsin. In 1870, he married Beret Betsey Oldsdatter Gladhaug, who went by Betsy. In 1871 Holton and his family would moved to Lake Park, Minnesota where he opened a farm implement business until 1882. He would also serve as sheriff in Minnesota until 1880. Also while in Lake Park, he would serve Minnesota House district 41 from 1872 to 1874.

He and the family then came to Larimore in 1882. He opened a farm machinery business until 1887. He took up the collections and insurance in 1896 at the First National Bank which he continued until 1898. He and Thos. H. Pugh formed a partnership under the name of Holton and Pugh that was a law, collection, and real estate business. This lasted until 1899 when they dissolved it. He then went into business on his own with the help of his son, Olaf Bernard Holton. In addition to those businesses, Theodore would also run a nursery were he sold different types of trees and plants such as willow, spruce, Mountain ash and berry plants.

He and Betsey had eight children, Mina Bertina (1870-1885), Rosina (1871-1950), Hannah Helene (1873-1932), Anna Hanna (1874-1853), Olaf Bernard (1876-1953), Karl Torvald (1878-1878), Minnie Theolynne (went by Theolynne) (1882-1954), and May Bertina (1884-1851).

Theodore Holton died December 15, 1916 in Grand Forks County, North Dakota. He is buried in Bellevue Cemetery in Larimore, North Dakota.
