Scope and Contents
The research records of Thomas Isern consist of architectural analyses of structures in Bowman County and whether each is acceptable to be considered for the National Register of Historic Places. These architectural analyses consist of photos, maps, and reports. Also included in the collection are the notes and the official publication, Historic Architectural Survey of Bowman County. There are two series in the collection: Background and Survey Files.
The Research & Background Series consists of documents relating to the entirety of the project rather to specific properties. Included here are the bound publication, Historic Architectural Survey of Bowman County, notes, reports, and other related information.
The Survey Files Series includes the architectural analyses of buildings Bowman County. The analyses are comprised of photos, maps, and survey reports.

History
The Historical Architectural Survey of Bowman County was led by Thomas D. Isern, professor of history at North Dakota State University; Lotte Isern, a research assistant; and Tricia Velure, a graduate assistant.
The abstract of the bound publication, Historical Architectural Survey of Bowman County states the following: “This reconnaissance-level survey treated 252 sites comprising 1044 features in rural and small-town Bowman County. It results in recommendations that 55 properties be considered for the National Register of Historic Places. It identifies properties for prospective individual, district, or thematic nomination. It also provides a large data base of information on the material culture of Bowman County, a resource for future study and planning. It places the historic architecture of the county into the context of regional history, with emphasis on settlement instigated by construction of the Milwaukee Railroad in 1907-8.”
