Scope and Contents
The majority of Lyle E Huseby Papers consists of speeches, written and given by Mr. Huseby. Included are some correspondence and paperwork from a community play. The collection is divided into four series:
The Biographical series contains news articles from the Spectrum and the Fargo Forum with articles about Mr. Huseby and his activities within the community.
The Speeches series contains speeches and lectures, written and given by Lyle Huseby, on various topics which include legal matters, happiness, and political speeches from when he ran for Cass County State’s Attorney. This series also includes speeches from dedications and awards ceremonies he spoke at in the community; a select few of the speeches are filed with their accompanying correspondence.
The Correspondence series contains letters concerning the speeches Mr. Huseby gave over the years.
The Community Play series contains a copy of the Agatha Christie play “Witness for the Prosecution” in which Mr. Huseby was chosen to play the character of the defense attorney, Sir Wilfred Robarts, along with his personal notes for the play.

Biography
Lyle E. Huseby, who served for eight years as States Attorney for Cass County, was born December 26, 1916 in Grand Forks, ND. During his high school years his family moved to Fargo where he graduated from Fargo Central High School. He attended the North Dakota Agricultural College (now NDSU) in Fargo and then wemt to the University of North Dakota (UND) in Grand Forks where he graduated with a law degree in 1940. He practiced law in Grand Forks until 1942 when he enlisted in the Navy. During his naval career, he rose to the rank of gunnery officer and served on board tankers during World War II, crossing both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. He was a part of the task force involved in the D-Day invasion of France at Normandy in 1944. Mr. Huseby was discharged from the Navy in 1946, at which point he returned to Fargo and opened a law office.
Mr. Huseby’s career in law included four two-year elections, beginning in 1955, as the State’s Attorney for Cass County. After three two-term elections, his term as State’s Attorney, Cass County ended in 1962 at which point he returned to private practice, becoming a top criminal defense attorney. In addition, Mr. Huseby took an active role in his community; he served as president of the North Dakota State’s Attorney Association and the Cass County Bar Association. Mr. Huseby also served as the former commander of the Disabled Veteran’s Association and was secretary of the Cass County Republican Party. Mr. Huseby often spoke to audiences on a variety of topics that included law theories, the constitution, patriotism, and personal rights. He also taught classes at Moorhead State College on Mass Communications Law, and lectured at NDSU; and in addition, he sponsored an annual forensics tournament held at NDSU for over ten years. Mr. Huseby married Helen McPhail on June 2, 1947, and together they had five children, sons: Lincoln, Cody, Custer, and daughters: Heather and Robin. Mr. Huseby died June 7, 1977, at the age of 60.
