Biography

Gerald A. Richardson, (b. 1/6/1930) was the former Director of Communications and University Relations, Associate Professor of Communication, and Director of Special Publications at N.D.S.U. Richardson started his academic career by achieving a B.A. in Printing and Journalism from South Dakota State University in 1953. Immediately upon graduation, Richardson enlisted as a U.S. Army public information officer in Korea, serving from 1953-1955. Upon completing his service, Richardson returned to S.D.S.U. for a short time, before relocating to Seattle, Washington. Seeking to further his professional aims, Richardson then earned an M.A. in Communication Science from the University of Washington in 1967. While his professional career began as Assistant University Editor at S.D.S.U. from 1955-1961, and a short stint as News Bureau Editor at the University of Washington from 1960-1961, he soon found his true home in North Dakota.

Richardson joined the communications and university relations office of North Dakota State University in 1963, serving as bureau editor for three years. The following six years saw Richardson serve as University Editor. In 1971, Richardson obtained a position as director of University relations at N.D.S.U. During this portion of his professional career, he served as Assistant Professor from 1967-1969, and then as Associate Professor after 1969.

Richardson achieved many awards and made many strides for the University during his time of service. He served 24 years as the editor of Frontiers, and Bison Briefs, both alumni publications for N.D.S.U. Bison Briefs was one of Richardson’s biggest accomplishments, garnering over 50 regional and national awards. In 1985 it was chosen as one of the top two alumni newspapers in the nation by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (C.A.S.E.) In 1987, Richardson himself received the C.A.S.E. District VI Distinguished Service Award for his 30 year involvement in exemplary academic service.

Gerald Richardson loved life and had great passions in addition to his academic career, and public service. Travelling, photography, and writing, as well as an interest in the history of journalism and typography figured highly in his private life. Gerald’s wife, Lou Richardson was the love of his life and they both served at N.D.S.U. for a combined 57 years of service before jointly retiring in 1993.

Gerald Richardson died on July 27, 2021.
