History
The North Dakota Federation of Women’s Clubs, organized in Devils Lake, Chautauqua in July 1897. Mary Whedon, editor of Western Womanhood, suggested a “Woman’s Day” at the Chautauqua in order to facilitate a fair federation for women. The General Federation required a minimum of nine clubs to form a state federation. The official statement of the North Dakota Federation of Women’s Clubs was to “bring the women of the State into communication for acquaintance, mutual helpfulness, and the promotion of higher intellectual, social and moral conditions.” Membership is open to “all clubs organized for literary, artistic, musical, philanthropic, scientific, or other educational purposes, who owe allegiance to no political or sectarian control.”
The North Dakota Federation of Women’s Clubs has been involved in numerous projects, including the establishment of the food purity laws, commissioned a statue of Sakakawea, gathered data for the Pioneer Mother Project, maintained libraries and museums, and purchased the first bookmobile in North Dakota.
