 Collection
Identifier: Mss 295

Scope and Contents

The research records of Thomas Isern consist of surveys of the near south side residential area of Grand Forks, N.D. in 2001-2002, following a devastating flood in 1997. These architectural analyses consist of photos, maps, and reports. In addition to the analyses, the collection contains four folders of related information, including a summary of a 1995 survey and Isern and Hoffer’s 2002 updated summary. There are two series in the collection: Background and Survey Files. The Background Series consists of documents relating to the entirety of the project rather to specific properties. Included here is the bound publication, Near South Side Residential Area, Grand Forks Area, North Dakota: An Update Survey, notes, reports, and other related information. The Survey Files Series includes the architectural analyses of buildings in Grand Forks’s near south side. The analyses are comprised of photos, maps, and survey reports.

History

In June 2000 the Grand Forks Historic Preservation Commission (GFHPC) issued a request for bids and a statement of scope for a survey of the near south side residential area of Grand Forks, N.D. This was an ‘update survey’ because it covered an area treated in a previous comprehensive survey done for the GFHPC in 1993-1995 by Harleen Young. Its final report was titled Grand Forks 1995 Architectural Survey Draft Report. The reason for this update survey was the Red River Flood of 1997. Every property documented in the 1993-1995 survey was flooded by the Red River in 1997. Tom Isern, Professor of History at NDSU, through the Institute for Regional Studies, submitted a proposal in September 2000 to perform the survey and in January 2001 was awarded the contract. He hired Jeff Hoffer, a master’s student in history at NDSU, to assist with the project. Field work and associated research for the survey began in January 2001 and continued into November. The final report was issued in 2002, titled Near South Side Residential Area, Grand Forks, North Dakota: An Update Survey, issued by the Institute for Regional Studies as part of its Dakota Monographs publication series.
