Scope and Content

This collection consists of two photographic prints portraying a fenced in pasture, with the second photo showing the pasture land encircled by horses and ranchers, both taken in the Badlands. There is one postcard identified as Branding Cattle at A Badland Ranch, by L. Osborn, Dickinson, N.D.

History

Much of eastern North Dakota was devoted to raising wheat and other crops. The western half of the state was more arid and contained the Badlands, an eroded landscape that made farming very difficult. Because of this ranching developed in the western part of the state for raising of cattle, sheep, or horses.
