Scope and Contents

The Rasmus Gunderson family scrapbook contains 42 leaves. It includes photographs of family, friends and places relating to the Gunderson and Klingenberg families. Most of the photographs are unidentified. There are also a large number of postcards from Bergen, Norway, as well as several North Dakota locations including Minot, Kenmare. The scrapbook also holds greeting cards, telegrams and letters addressed to both Rasmus and Martha Gunderson. Other items include the State of North Dakota Stallion Registration Board 21st Annual Report dated December 1930, Rasums Gunderson’s draft registration card from 1918, a Sunnhordlands ribbon from 1935, and a copy of The Ambrose Herald newspaper from June 25, 1936. Also included is Ragna Marie Gunderson’s baptismal certificate dated December 14, 1908. The scrapbook was in poor condition, and has undergone archival reconstructed.

Biography

Rasmus Gunderson was born in Bremnes, Hordaland County, Norway on September 1, 1884. He came to the United States in 1902 at the age of 18. He first worked in Fingal, North Dakota, and while there he met his wife, Martha Klingenberg. She was born in Sogn, Norway on March 10, 1881. She moved with her family to the United States in 1906. Rasmus and Martha were married on October 3, 1907 at Valley City, North Dakota. In 1908, they homesteaded in the NW ¼ of Section 9, in Twin Butte Township, Divide County. It was on this homestead that they raised five children, Ragna Marie (Mrs. Charles Hanson); Brunhild Serene (Mrs. Orville Knutson) ; Alice Roselia (Mrs. Wallace M. Murphy) ; Gladys; Mabel (Mrs. Gerald A. Briggs) ; and Arthur Gerhard. The family were charter members of the Immanuel Free Church near Ambrose. Martha Gunderson died of a stroke in June 1936, and Rasmus died in March 1943. Both died on their homestead.
