Scope and Contents

The Richard Schneider Papers consists of seven different series: Yearbooks, Baby Book, Ephemera, Education, Correspondence, Newspaper Clippings, and Memoirs. The Baby Book Series consists of Richards’s baby book from the year he was born, remaining mostly empty. The Correspondence Series consists of letters and correspondence to his family members. The Ephemera Series contains awards, certificates, and membership cards belonging to Richard Schneider. The Education Series consists of Richard’s school papers, the “Red River Handicap Club book,” commencement programs, evaluations and drafts of his work. The Newspaper Series consists of newspaper clippings of articles about the Crippled Children’s School and Richard Schneider’s books and awards. The Memoirs Series consists of personal papers, and chapters written by Richard on his life, and how he overcame challenges. The Yearbook Series includes yearbook of the “Island Echo” from his years at the Crippled Children’s School.

Biography

Richard Schneider was born on December 9, 1939 to Mary and Edward Schneider. He was born with cerebral palsy. He graduated from the Crippled Children’s School, in Jamestown, North Dakota. He received his undergraduate degree from NDSU in 1974 and went on to obtain his master of science in Education from NDSU in 1988. Richard’s brother John was active in the state legislator and served in the House of Representatives from 1982 to 1992. Richard also had three other brothers, Joe, Steve, and Mark, who all graduated from NDSU, and a sister Dorothy who was a colonel in the army.

Richard used an electric typewriter to help with school and written communication. Richard won many awards and was an active legislative advocate for the handicapped. He wrote papers during his time at NDSU on transportation, and his disability in the hopes that there would be improvements in buildings and spreading awareness. Richard passed away in 2010.
