Scope and Contents

The Rolly and Pat Hogue Lawrence Welk Collection documents the close friendship between the Hogues and Lawrence Welk as well as the Hogue’s making of arrangements for Welk for his visits back to North Dakota. The collection has been organized into four series: Correspondence, Calendars, Newspaper clippings and Subject files. The Correspondence Series contains both personal and business letters from Lawrence Welk to Rolly (Buster) Hogue and family from 1965 to 1992. The letters primarily discuss Welk's visits to North Dakota and activities in his life in California. There are also some letters from Governor William Guy, Harold Schafer, Welk's biographer Bernice McGeehan, and others. The Calendars Series includes Lawrence Welk musical family pictorial calendars for the years 1958, 1979-1983. The calendars feature photographs of the Welk musical family members, birth dates and historical dates of the Welk Orchestra. The Newspaper Clippings Series covers Lawrence Welk's association with his home state of North Dakota, his love of golf, and biographical information. The Subject Files Series contains a wide variety of material documenting Lawrence Welk and Hogue's association with him. The Bob Hope Desert Classic file includes official souvenir programs, brochures, and golfing schedules. Mr. Hogue and Welk were participants. The golf scorecard file consists of scorecards, and a schedule for the 1969 Lawrence Pro-Am Celebrity Golf Tournament. The Lawrence Welk Country Club Village information includes brochures, and a postcard of this recreation resort. The North Dakota Rough Rider Award file contains a program of Welk's portrait unveiling. The event took place at the State Capitol in 1967. The scrapbook pages include photographs, correspondence, golf scorecards, and newspaper clippings from 1963-1967. The “Spotlight on Youth, a Family Plan for Business” was an article Lawrence Welk had written for the periodical, Christian Economics, July 1971. Also included in this file is an outline for the Musical Family Plan; an article titled, “Free Enterprise and Personal Responsibility” for Christian Economics; and a draft of the Spotlight article. Welk's farmstead file consists of the farmstead pamphlet, and periodical articles on the farmstead. The Welk programs file includes a concert ticket, a Lawrence Welk Banquet program from 1976, Lawrence Welk room reservations from 1971, and other Welk programs. The Welk publications consist of a Lawrence Welk magazine from Spring 1968, the obituary issue of the Musical Family News, Summer Quarter 1992, and two undated issues of An Evening with Friends.

Biography

Rolly (Buster) Hogue was born November 7, 1923 and grew up in Linton, North Dakota where his father was a physician. Mr. Hogue served in the United States Navy, and later owned his own construction company in Linton. After his war service he returned to Linton and helped his mother manage the Willows Hotel and other properties in the town. In 1950 he married Patricia Knudson of Pollock, S.D. Together they raised a family of six children. Rolly Hogue's association with Lawrence Welk started with his father, who was the Welk's family doctor. Hogue began playing golf around 1958, and began playing golf with Welk a few years later. Besides being Welk's golf partner, Hogue was also his scheduling manager when Lawrence Welk would visit North Dakota. In 1980 he and wife Pat moved to Fargo, N.D. where he worked as a realtor for Coldwell Banker Real Estate. Upon his retirement they moved to Rapid City, S.D. and in 2007 to Florida. He died there March 5, 2009.
