Biography

The Dakota Bank and Trust Co. first appeared in the Fargo and Moorhead directory in 1910. It was known then as the Dakota Trust Co. It listed Max Stern as president, R. S. Lewis and James Kennedy as vice presidents, W. J. Lorshbough as secretary, and M. E. Kennedy as assistant secretary. Max Stern, born in Germany in 1860, came to North Dakota in 1880. He married Fannie Kaufman and they had a son, Alfred, and a daughter, Ada K. Greenbaum. He was known to the city of Fargo as a communal worker, financier, and a prominent citizen. Changes to the bank did not happen until 1916.

In 1917, Max Stern’s brother, Alex Stern, was president of the Dakota Savings Bank. He was a director for the Merchants National Bank from 1910-1922/23. In 1921, the two banks held a join meeting. The directors from both the Dakota Savings Bank and the Dakota National Bank were present. It is at this meeting when the banks decided to become known as Dakota National Bank.

Through 1926, the Fargo and Moorhead Directory still listed Dakota Trust Company along with Dakota National Bank. Alex Stern was president for both. In January of 1935, William Stern, Alex’s son, took over the bank. He was president until A. M. Eriksmoen took over in 1964.

In 1968, the name was again changed to Dakota National Bank and Trust Company. New drive-in auto tellers were an added feature to the bank in 1975. The bank changed it name again to Dakota Bank and Trust in 1981 and began construction on a downtown location that cost 6 million dollars.

Through several mergers and acquisitions in the early to mid-1990s, the bank was folded into U. S. Bank.
