Biographical / Historical

Gamma Phi Beta sorority started as Sigma Theta sorority in 1908 at Fargo College, Fargo, North Dakota. When Fargo College closed in 1922, two undergraduates from the sorority enrolled at North Dakota Agricultural College (NDAC) and transferred the organization there. The group grew, and within 21 years had initiated 155 girls into sisterhood. In 1929 they petitioned for membership to the Gamma Phi Beta national sorority. In 1930 they were initiated into the Gamma Phi Beta national organization. They continued to uphold their reputation as local fundraisers, as well as being active in campus activities and the community. In 1986, due to a decline in membership the Gamma Phi Betas sold their house to the YMCA, and purchased a smaller one. This decline in numbers never picked up, and the Gamma Phi Beta sorority at NDSU dissolved in 1993. They sold off the majority of their property, allowing alumni to purchase what they wanted first, and then allowing the public to make purchases.
