Scope and Contents

This collection deals with the floods of the Red River Valley. In this collection there are materials relating to general flood information of the Red River Valley, flood information relating specifically to Martin and Barbara, flood information relating to the 1993 flood of the Sheyenne River, correspondence, and photographs.

Biography

Martin J. Marchello earned his master’s and PhD degrees at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He joined NDSU in 1968. He became internationally known for his bison research in the area of nutrition composition, both grass-fed and grain-fed animals. He retired from NDSU in 2005 from the Department of Animal and Range Sciences.

Barbara Handy-Marchello was born in Illinois and has lived in both Colorado and Wyoming before moving to North Dakota in 1980. She earned her Master’s in Art in American History at North Dakota State University and in 1996 her Ph.D. at the University of Iowa. She taught Women’s History and American West at the University of North Dakota for fifteen years before retiring in 2006.
