History

Raymond Darrow Warner was born in 1890, and raised in Fargo, N.D. He was educated at Dakota Business College, and attended optometry school in Chicago. When he returned to Fargo, he worked for a short time with M.A. Hagen in his jewelry store fitting eyeglasses. He determined that optometry was not the career for him, and took a position with the insurance firm, Wheelock and Wheelock. He worked locally for a while, and then went on the road selling for the Boston Insurance Agency.

On October 1, 1911, he joined forces with Alonzo O. Rupert, who had been in the insurance business in Fargo for a number of years. The Rupert & Warner agency operated out of a building at 609 N.P. Avenue. In April, 1915, the firm moved to the A.O.U.W building located on Roberts Street. About this time Raymond’s two brothers, W. Fred and Clifford H. Warner, joined the firm. Together they bought out A. O. Rupert in 1920. Around the same time, they moved to the new Merchants National Bank Building, located at 122-124 Broadway, occupying the 2nd floor.

The company continued using the name, Rupert & Warner, until 1930, when the firm was renamed Warner and Company, with Raymond Warner serving as President, and W. Fred and Clifford serving as Vice-Presidents. In 1931, with the completion of the Black Building, located at 114-118 Broadway, the firm was among the its first tenants, locating their offices on the 7th floor. In July 1934, an agreement was made with Hull Insurance Agency, to combine forces, and this was followed by the Ed. P. Cosgriff Co. in 1937. W. Fred Warner passed away in December 1939, and in April 1949, Clifford H. Warner died. In 1959, Warner and Company purchased their own building at 318-320 Broadway. In 1964, Harold Hayer joined the company, and became president and majority owner in 1970. In 1974, Warner Investment Corporation was founded. In July 1976, Raymond Warner died.

The company expanded to include Thompson-Schaefer Insurance in Grand Forks, the Kramer Agency in Bismarck, and Schiller Insurance in Detroit Lakes, Minn. In 2007, Harold Hayer’s son, Brian Hayer took over as president, CEO and co-owner. He became sole owner in 2018. On March 31, 2019, Warner and Company Insurance and it subsidiaries in Grand Forks and Detroit Lakes were purchased by Bell Bank.
