Scope and Contents

This collection is divided into four series. With a few exceptions, the original order of the collection when it arrived was left in place.

Series 1: Condell’s Corner This series contains notes and scripts for the radio program done for KDSU, North Dakota State’s Public Radio station.

Series 2: Diaries and Planners This series contains diaries and planners from 1958 to 1979 and give an insight into Condell’s thinking and daily life. This series includes diaries from his time in Spain.

Series 3: Cassette Tapes This series includes four cassette tapes. Three of them are Swedish lessons, and one is a taping of Condell’s Corner.

Series 4: Miscellaneous Personal papers This series contains material that did not fit into the others. Items in this series include histories, music research, letters, and concert programs.

Biography

James Franklin Condell was born to Charles Homer and Mary Jane (Fielding) Condell on October 10, 1921 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was awarded a music scholarship to study at Kentucky State College in Frankfort, Kentucky where he played guitar for four years in the Kentucky State Collegians. He graduated in 1942 and enrolled in a Signal Corps Course. When he graduated from there he was drafted in the United States Army Air Corp and served from 1943 to 1946.

When he was discharged in 1946, he spent time in Nashville playing in a nightclub. He went on to earn his Master’s degree from Columbia University in 1948. He began is academic career at Maryland State College where he served as the Dean of Men and Director of the Men’s Glee club. In 1949, he came back to New York to get his doctorate. However, while studying at New York University, he accepted a position at Florida A and M University in Tallahassee. He was on faculty there for six years.

James would earn his doctorate from the University of Nebraska and move north to serve as a clinical psychologist for seven years at mental health hospital in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Following that, he accepted a position as a professor of Psychology Minnesota State University Moorhead. He served 27 years at MSUM, 10 of those as the Chair of the Psychology department.

During the course of James’s life, he was still deeply involved with music. This love music pushed him to study classical guitar for two years at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid, Spain. When he retired from MSUM in 1992, he devoted the rest of his time to music. For 13 years he was in charge of the weekly jazz program at KDSU called Condell’s Corner.

James was married to Dr. Yvonne C. Condell who is a Professor Emerita of Biology at MSUM. They were married for 46 years before he died September 4, 1998.

These papers contains notes, outlines, and research relating to the radio program, Condell did for KDSU, Condell's Corner as well as research he did for other programs, diaries and planners he wrote, and three cassette tapes.
