Biography
Sigurd Walter Melsted was born in Gardar, North Dakota to Benidikt and Geirfridur Melsted. He would graduate from 1938 from North Dakota Agricultural College with a bachelor degree in agriculture. He would go onto to graduate from the Rutgers University with a masters of science in Soil Pedology. He would then move to graduate from the University of Illinois with his Ph.D. in soil chemistry in 1943.
Sigurd would teach at all the universities he attended, teaching in the area of soil chemistry. In addition to teaching, he served in the military from 1943 to 1946.
He died in Illinois in 1995 and is buried in Grander, North Dakota
