Biography

Andrew Joseph Kaess was born May 11, 1878 in Vienna, Austria to Wenzel and Kathryn. They immigrated to the United States between 1882 and 1884 and found their way to Minnesota. Andrew would graduate from New Ulm high school. He would go on to become a doctor, graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1903. He became a member of the Minnesota National Guard as well as serving as a coroner for Clay county. He held a practice in Fargo, North Dakota.

Andrew Married Addie M. Bentley on July 20, 1909. By 1920, he and Addie moved to Fargo, North Dakota. They would eventually have five children, Mary Hartley, James Kaess, Karl Kaess, Kenneth Kaess, and Robert Kaess. Andrew, in addition to being a practice doctor in the Fargo-Moorhead area, was also veteran. He enlisted August 15, 1917 and was eventually discharged in December of 1918. He would continue to serve in the National Guard. He did fill out a draft card for World War I, but likely never served due to age. He and Addie would eventually move to California, where on April 11, 1958, he died. He is buried in San Bruno, California.
