Biography

The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) first began in the aftermath of the Civil War in 1865. Early federal intervention kept it suppressed through the early 1870s. The second KKK movement started in Georgia in 1915 and flourished nationwide through the 1920s. This second movement really took inspiration from D. W. Griffith’s book, The Book of a Nation. Much of this second movement also focused on Catholics and Jews. The last and current iteration of the KKK started in 1946 but really emerged in the 1950s, focused on targeting Black and the civil rights movement.

The KK first became prevalent in North Dakota in the early 1920s and by the mid-1920s they had begun to push their political agendas in the Red River Valley. It’s unknown how many KKK members there were in the 1920s in the Red River Valley, but it is know that on September 9, 1925, 800 Klansmen marched in Fargo, North Dakota. According to Reverend William Sherman, during the 1920s there were about 50 cross burnings in North Dakota. By at least the mid to late 1930s, the KKK had mostly died out in the Red River Valley.
