Scope and Contents

The Catherine Buttery Throlson Scrapbooks document her life from 1931 to 1935 while attending Warwick High School and Mayville State Teachers College. The scrapbooks are a window to a young woman’s life in rural North Dakota during the Great Depression. The two bound scrapbooks, a red one from approximately cover from 1931 to 1934 up to the time of her graduation from Warwick High School, and the black one from high school graduation to Mayville State Teachers College graduation from 1934 to 1935. The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings of national and local news, including the Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping, Mahatma Gandhi, Charlie Chaplin, Minnesota promotional materials, calling cards, programs, napkins and other items from restaurants, candy and gum wrappers from special events, doilies and table decorations from banquets, handmade valentines, how-to clippings and pictures snipped for decorations. In the Black Scrapbook there is a movie promotional flyer in color for “After Office Hours” starring Clark Gable and Constance Bennett.

Biography

Catherine Ellen Buttery was born to Frederick Clifford and Esther Buttery south of Warwick, North Dakota on June 1, 1916 and passed away on Sunday November 25, 2007, at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd New Rockford. She was ninety-one years old. Her father, Fred, was a Rural Mail Carrier who was born in Wisconsin in February of 1888. Fred’s father, Austin Buttery was born May of 1844 in Canada and was of English descent, his parents were both born in England. Austin immigrates to the United States in 1862. Fred’s mother, Katherine (Katie) was born in Wisconsin in April of 1854, with both of her parents having been born in New York. In 1900 they are renting a farm in Chester Township in Grand Forks County. Austin is a farmer and Katie is a nurse, and they have nine children, all living, 7 of which are listed on the census and were born in Wisconsin. Fred’s siblings are as follows: Lulu, born Jan 1876 was a dressmaker, Alfred, born May 1875 was a farm laborer, Grace F. born Dec. 1878 was a servant girl, John R. Born Dec. 1882 was a farm laborer, George A. born Sept. 1885 was at school, and James was born in Sept. 1891. Esther’s father, and mother, Ellen Hanson, were both born in Sweden. Ellen immigrated in 1865 and became a naturalized citizen in 1880. Catherine had two younger sisters, Winnifred, four years younger than her, and Roslyn, seven years younger. She attended school in Warwick and graduated on May 31, 1934. Catherine attended Mayville State Teachers College from 1934 to 1935. She married Carl William Throlson on June 1, 1937 in New Rockford, N.D. Carl was born October 14, 1909 to Andrew and Ellen Throlson. Andrew Throlson immigrated in 1895 and Ellen in 1900, and they were both naturalized in 1900. Carl had a sister, Edith who was eight years older than he, a brother, Clifford, who was three years older, a sister, Myrtle, two years younger, Grace, four years younger, and Helen, eight years younger. Carl passed away on July 3, 1982 in Eddy County, N.D. at age seventy-two. Catherine is survived by two sons Gary and David, and a daughter Cathy Throlson. There was also a third son, Daniel, who preceded her in death.
