Scope and Content

Seven 17 x 22 cm. gelatin silver prints taken by photographer George Ryan. Topically they cover themes of agriculture, horticulture and precipitation. They appear to be taken in Cass County around the Maple River, and the Casselton, N.D. areas. A copy of the original newspaper article from June 16, 1935, is included in the file.

History

On June 16, 1935, the Minneapolis Sunday Tribune published a series of photographs, taken by George Ryan, under the title "Better Days in North Dakota". The series seems to show improving weather and economic conditions in the state of North Dakota following a farm depression that started in the state in the early 1920s, failures of banks, followed by extreme drought in the early 1930s.
