Scope and Content

The collection consists entirely of copy photographic prints, which appear to have been copied from the collection of Sam Geller. They feature families prominent in the Fargo and Grand Forks Jewish community, including the Rabbi’s Papermaster and Lesk. The photos also include both the interior and exterior of the Fargo Hebrew Synagogue, and the exterior of the Children of Israel Synagogue in Grand Forks.

History

There have been small pockets of Jewish individuals in Dakota Territory as early as 1880. Some early settlements included Painted Woods, Devils Lake, and Ashley, North Dakota. The growth of the railroad continued to bolster the communities and a permanent congregation was established in Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1892. A synagogue was charged in 1896 in Fargo, North Dakota. According to city-data.com there were 730 Jews in North Dakota in 2000.
