Scope and Content

The Lake Ashtabula (N.D.) Photograph Collection is an artificial collection created by archives staff. It currently holds four photographic prints. All appear to have been taken by the Grater North Dakota Association. The photographers listed on the photographs are W. P. Sebens, and Heal H. Tracy. They appear to have been taken between 1953 and 1955.

History

In 1951 the Baldhill Dam was constructed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers on the Sheyenne River ten miles upstream from Valley City in Barnes County, N.D. The resulting reservoir created by the dam was named Lake Ashtabula. The name "Ashtabula" is a Native American word meaning "Fish River." The lake covers 5,234 acres.
