History

The first mentions of coal along the Heart River area was around the 1880s. Mining on a commercial bases took place began at Lehigh, N.D. in 1894 when several companies began underground mining. The Lehigh Briquetting Company began to make fuel briquettes from their factory in 1929. The process would take the raw lignite coal, extract the oil and water and compact the leftover char into large pellets. I created a product that was much higher in BTU per ton than lump coal. At the height of it production, the plant employed about 75 workers. The company was sold to a Canadian group, which then sold to Dickinson Coal Mine Company, and in 1959 the plant was purchased by Husky Industries. The company then switched to making barbecue briquettes.
