Scope and Content

The Missouri River Photograph Collection is an artificial collection created to house general views of the river from various donors. Currently the collection only holds two images. One a photographic print and the other a color commercial postcard. Both images feature the first Grant Marsh Bridge (I-29) built in 1965 between Bismarck and Mandan.

History

The Missouri River starts in the Rocky Mountains of western Montana, and flows east and south for 2,341 miles before entering the Mississippi River. In North Dakota it enters the state on the western border near Williston. Then is flows through Lake Sakakawea, a reservoir created by the Garrison Dam, built between 1947 and 1953. From there is flows southward through Bismarck/Mandan into the north half of Lake Oahe, as it passes into South Dakota.
