History

The North Dakota Coal and Oil Photograph Collection is an artificial collection created by archives staff. The recorded history of lignite coal mining goes back to 1873 when small mines sprung up along the in western North Dakota along the railroad lines. North Dakota has the second largest lignite coal production in the United States.

Oil was discovered near Tioga in 1951, on farmland owned Henry Bakken. The northwestern part of the state experienced an oil boom between 2008 and 2014, due to advances in extraction technology, including horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, making previously inaccessible oil deposits recoverable.
