Scope and Content
The 1st North Dakota Infantry photograph collection is housed in two folders, the first folder contains a series of photographic postcards taken in 1916 during their active service at Mercedes, Texas, and the Mexican border.
The second folder holds five photographic prints showing solders lined up in front of the federal building, marching on Main Avenue, and at the Northern Pacific Railroad Depot all in Bismarck, N.D., taken in 1916 at their deployment.

History
The North Dakota Army National Guard, Company E, 1st Infantry Regiment, was formed on December 8, 1906 in Williston, North Dakota. It was activated in for service on the Mexican border on June 8,1916, to protect American lives and property against the Mexican bandit, Poncho-Villa. It was deactivated on February 14, 1917. It was re-activated on March 25, 1917 and drafted into federal service on August 5, 1917. On October 4, 1917 it was reorganized and redesignated as Company E, 164th Infantry, an element of the 41st Infantry Division. The company was deactivated February 28, 1919. Two years later the company was federally recognized and redesignated October 21, 1921 as Company E, 164th Infantry, an element of the 34th Infantry Division.
