Scope and Content

The Russell S. Reid Photograph Collection contains 8 photographic prints. All appear to have been taken on a trip to the North Dakota Badlands taken around July 13, 1928 with political leaders, including Rep. Sinclair, Rep. Burtness, Sen. Lynn Frazier, Sen. Gerald Nye, and Gov. Sorlie. The trip was to give members of the United States Senate - Public Lands Committee a tour of the proposed Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Senators visiting were Porter H. Dale of VT, H. F. Ashurst of AZ, and Ingham Mack, clerk of the committee.

Biography

Russell S. Reid was born in Hannah, N.D. on February 6, 1900, the son of Peter and Henrietta (Balfour) Reid. His parents had come to Dakota Territory and settled in Cavalier County in 1886 and 1889. He was educated in the Bismarck public schools. He began his career in the Bismarck Public Library in 1918. Shortly after that, he started working for the North Dakota State Historical Society, first as an assistant, then curator of the State Museum and then superintendent. He also was the editor of the North Dakota History Journal, and served as the federal procurement officer for the National Park Service C.C.C., and served as secretary for the State Parks Commission. He also served as the first vice-president of the International Peace Gardens. He died on July 9, 1967, and is buried in Fairview Cemetery, in Bismarck.
