Biography

Lorenzo Dow Judkins was born on February 17, 1833 in Chesterville, Maine, son of Joseph and Abigail (Knowles) Judkins. On May 5, 1859 he married Maria A Ward in Lowell, Mass. They moved to Haverhill Mass. where he opened a photography studio. When the Civil War broke out, he accompanied the army as a photographer of the scenery and battles. In 1868 he moved to Indianapolis, where he continued his photography business. His wife went insane and was sent to an asylum there, and some bad business dealings cause him to lose much of his property. His health also began to fail him, and his doctor advised him to find a dryer climate. In 1882, he move to Bismarck in the Dakota Territory. He opened a studio, and operated there until it was destroyed by fire in March 1890. His health quickly declined and he died in Bismarck on August 14, 1890.
