Biography

John Randolph Hamlin was born on May 19, 1833 in Portland, Maine, the son of John and Lucy Hamlin. He moved to Minnesota sometime before 1860, and worked as a farm laborer near the town of Plainview. On April 21, 1861, he married Paulina Jane Smith. John was called to serve in the Union Army in Company K, Unit 5, Minnesota Infantry with a rank of Private, and served from July 2, 1864 to September 6, 1865. After the war, he and his wife continued to live in Plainview, where they had three children, Mary Anne (b. 1864), Willis Sanford (b. 1867), and John Randolph, Jr. (b. 1870) Sometime between 1875 and 1885, the family moved to Casselton, Dakota Territory. Here he operated a photography studio until about 1896, when they moved to Arizola, Arizona. They had a 20 acre ranch and had around 500 chickens. They lived there until his death on September 15, 1903. Paulina then went to live with her daughter in Colton, California until her death in 1924. They are both buried in the Weaver Pioneer Cemetery, at Casa Grande, Arizona.
