Gottlieb Franke was born to Jakob Gottlieb and Christina (Wagner) Franke) on August 30, 1846 in Schadendorf, Landkreis Görlitz, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1872 and traveled to Wisconsin. While there, he married Augusta Amelia Otto on September 30, 1875. They would eventually have seven children, Ida, Paul Rudolph, Leo Henry, Emma Amelia, Hugo Max, Max Herman, and George Gottlieb. Between 1875 and 1880 the Franke family traveled between St. Louis, Missouri and North Dakota. They eventually settled in Arthur, North Dakota and started farming.
