History

In February 1938, the U.S. Congress passed the Agricultural Adjustment Act. As part of this act an “ever-normal granary” was provided to store surplus grain to keep it off the market in fat years and release it in lean years. The government built wooden grain bins across the countryside for this purpose. When GI’s returned home after the war, the were in desire of having homes of their own. However, this proved to be difficult due to a shortage of lumber. The government had overbuilt the grain bins, and so they were placed up for sale. A number of the bins were purchased and renovated into homes at a relatively low price of $35 for the purchase, and another $25 to move.
