History

The Sons of Norway was founded in 1895, in Minneapolis, Minnesota as a fraternal organization representing those with Norwegian heritage by promotion and preservation of the culture and heritage, as well as providing life insurance and other financial products.



The first lodge founded in North Dakota was the Varden Lodge No. 21 in Grand Forks, which was organized June 22, 1903. This was followed by Heimdal Lodge No. 24 in Devils Lake, on August 4, 1903, Kringen Lodge No. 25 in Fargo was organized August 20, 1903, Thor Lodge, No. 17 in Minot, June 29, 1907, Bjarne Lodge No. 086 in Williston in 1908, and Sverdrup Lodge No. 107 of Bismarck, March 31, 1910. There were numerous other lodges that sprung up in towns across the state.
