Presentation Sisters Photograph Collection

 Collection
Identifier: Photo Folio 2

Scope and Content

The Presentation Sisters Photograph Collection contains two photographic prints that were purchased at a convent estate sale in May 2021. They were originally framed and hung as a larger collage on a wall. Due to the light exposure some deterioration is evident on the prints. The identifications for the prints are based upon a name plate affixed to the original frames.

History

“Two Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Cork, Ireland, came to Wheeler, near Yankton, SD in the southern half of Dakota Territory in 1880 to teach the Native Americans. Their school near Wheeler was destroyed by a flood that same year. Invited by Father James Stephan, pastor of St. Mary's Church of Fargo, the Sisters and three novices came to Fargo opened a school in 1882, and taught in the church building. The following year a convent and school were erected on Seventh A venue and Eighth Street and given the name "St. Joseph Convent and Academy." In 1897, when the Yerxa residence on north Broadway was purchased it housed the convent and the newly established Sacred Heart Academy; the original structure on eighth street was renamed St. John's Orphanage and Free School. A new brick Sacred Heart Academy and Convent building was constructed at 1310 north Broadway 1914. In 1961 Villa Nazareth replaced St. John's Orphanage. The convent and academy building on north Broadway became diocesan offices after the tornado of 1957. The newly-located Sacred Heart Convent and Presentation Center in south Fargo continue to serve in the diocese in teaching, nursing, retreat and parish ministries.” - Sondag, Borgia.
