Biography

Katherine Louise Hughes was born in Iowa on March 31, 1873, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew C. Hughes. In 1887, the family moved to Fargo, North Dakota, and later to Steele County, North Dakota. Katherine attended Mayville (North Dakota) Normal School and in 1897, married Daniel J. Gumb. The couple resided at Hope, North Dakota, where Mrs. Gumb was active in the Women's Club, Library, American Legion Auxiliary, Hope Community Club and local government.

In later years, Katherine became interested in the history of Steele County and did research and writing with the hopes of publishing a county history, a goal which was never attained. Mrs. Gumb died on October 3, 1963, and is buried at Hope, N.D.
