Scope and Content

The Native Americans Photograph Collection is an artificial collection created to hold photographs from various donors relating to Indian tribes of the Upper Great Plains. The first two folders contain portraiture, mostly taken by F. Jay Haynes likely in the 1880s. The people featured are: Grey Bear, Running Deer, Hailstone, Chief Little Head, Chief White Bull, Me Catchem, Two Moon, Little Moon, Boy In The Water, Sitting Bull [engraving], Curley, Big Medicine Man, Bear Coat, Yellow Dog, Jessie [Iron Bull’s daughter], and several group photos. The third folder holds images of Earth Lodges. Two are color postcards of reconstructed earth lodge buildings, and one is a 1928 Hidatsa earth lodge south of Van Hook taken by Russell Reid. The fourth folder contains thirteen photographs and one postcard. They are mostly of social scenes such as pow-wows, and artifacts. Most are taken by North Dakota Travel Department.
