J.S. Lovell (Dakota Territory photographer) Photograph Collection contains two prints mounted on cardboard. The first photograph is of two women next to a tar paper claim shack. The photographer's stamp on the mount states "Photographed by Lovell, Fargo and Jamestown, D.T.". The second photograph features a man and a woman with two children seated in front of a log cabin. The photographer's stamp on the mount states "Photographed by Lovell, Fargo, D.T.". Exact locations and identities of the people pictured are unknown.

Biography
John Smith Lovell was born June 9, 1844 in Marathon, New York. He was the son of Joseph and Clarissa (Wadhams) Lovell. He moved with his family to Whiteside County, Illinois at a young age. Here he was married to Adelaide “Addie” Barnum on December 22, 1874. Together they had three children, Lula, Leila, and Paul. John took up the trade as a landscape photographer, and lived in Michigan, Ohio, and in the cities of Davenport, Council Bluffs, and Sioux City in Iowa. Around 1886, he can be found working as a photographer in both Jamestown and Fargo, Dakota Territory. He lived in Jamestown until he died on March 2, 1895.
