Scope and Content

Martin Schow Photograph Collection contains 2 photographic prints on cardboard mounts. Both were taken by O. E. Flaten, photographer from Moorhead, Minnesota, how was also Martin Schow’s son-in-law. The two photographs are of the Schow homes on their farm. The first is a log cabin with the family out front, the second is a large Victorian farmhouse with an open front porch.

Biography

Martin Schow was born November 4, 1835 in Svinskaug, Vestby, Akershus, Norway. He served in the army for five years, and operated a mercantile business near Christiania (Oslo) for seven years. He married Dorthea Bjerke on September 24, 1861. In 1866, they immigrated to the United States, via Quebec. They first settled in Winona, Minnesota where he worked as a miller. Then in June 1870, he came to Section 24, Noble Township, Cass County, (North) Dakota Territory. He was the first to settle in that township, where he farmed five hundred acres. He also served as Sheriff of Pembina County for a period of time.



He and his wife had 9 children. Clara, Alma, Robert, Lars, Jennie, Carl, Othelia, Maria, and Alma. Clara was married to O.E. Flaten, a prominent photographer in Moorhead, Minnesota. Martin Schow died on July 29, 1906 in Nobel Township, and his wife died in 1914. They are buried in Nora Lutheran Church Cemetery.
