History
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows was founded in Baltimore, Maryland on April 28, 1819 by John Wildey, whose object was to form a fraternity that would bring together in brotherly relations all peoples without regard to race or doctrines. The four principal laws of the order were to visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan.
The first lodge in Fargo was organized as the Northern Light Lodge, No. 6, sometime before 1881. This lodge ended with the great Fargo Fire of 1893, and its charter was surrendered. The next year a new I.O.O.F. lodge was organized as Wildey lodge, No. 55. The lodge was divided up into three principal grades. The Patriarchal branch, know as the Ridgley Encampment No. 3, the Patriarch’s Militant, or military order as Canton Royal, No. 2. And the woman’s auxiliary known as the Ivy Rebekah lodge No. 2, centered their attention on widows and orphans of lodge members.
