Biography
The Traveling Salesman Letters consist of four letters written between November 16, 1901 and December 29, 1901. The identity of the author is unknown other than his first name was Walter, and he was from Batavia, New York. He was staying at the Prescott Hotel in Fargo, North Dakota. He identifies the company he works for as “C.P. Co.”, with a man named Claude Wright. as the State Manager he is working under. It is possible that they are selling engravings as Claude Wright can be found as an artist and later engraver in Hornellsville, and later Elmira, New York.
While in Fargo, Walter makes observations regarding the weather, economic conditions, and character of people. He discusses entertainment, and going to a dance with a Fargo girl named Florence Hildahl. He makes friendships with other people at the hotels, and ate Christmas dinner at the Metropole Hotel restaurant with a Mr. Carney. His business appears to take him to neighboring towns of Hillsboro, Wahpeton, and Breckinridge.
