Scope and content
This collection contains negatives and photographs from James Arthur Jordan, Leslie Black, George Black, Anna Jane and Bill Schlossman.
These include photos of the Jordan, Black, and Schlossman friends and family and residences, Black Family Stores, the Black Building, Black Store Employee photos and Black Store summer events, Black and Schlossman family, events, and vacation photos.
Boxes 1, 2, and 3 contain photographs and negatives of the Jordan, Black, and Schlossman homes, business, social events, family, and friends. Box 3 and 4 contain photo albums belonging to the Jordan, Black and Schlossman families. Of interest is a Civil War era album that belonged to Col. R. M. Littler, an ancestor of the Jordan family. Box 5 contains glass plate negatives from the Black store summer events.

History
The Jordans lived in Anaconda, Montana with the James Arthur Jordan (1867-1936) and Anna Jordan nee Littler (1860 – 1943) and Alice Jordan (1896 – 1979). James worked for the railroad and Anna was very active in Lady’s aid and Mission Society through their Presbyterian church. Alice married George M Black in 1917.
Leslie Black (1843 – 1927) was a businessman who grew up and started his first business in Ripon, Wisconsin before moving to Iowa. Leslie and George founded The Black Store in 1912 in Fargo from a renovated movie house and the store would grow to eventually partner with Sears. When George Black stopped the affiliation with Sears, he opened the Store Without a Name because Sears said “The Black Store” was a Sear copyright, even though it was the Black name. George M Black renovated and expanded the Black Building in 1960s. George and Alice Black had three children: Anna Jane (1918 - 2001), Ned (1920 - 1944) and Marjorie (1924 – 1992). Anna Jane met William “Bill” Schlossman while attending Northwestern in Illinois and they married in 1941. Ned died in France on a reconnaissance mission in September 1944. Marjorie married the musician Gunther Schuller (1925 – 2015) in 1948.
George M Black bought land and Broadway and built the 8 story Black building. In 2016 the Black Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Blacks also ran the Graver Hotel, the Store Without a Name (SWAN) and the Black Store.
Anna Jane Black’s husband Bill Schlossman (1919 -1994) was in the Navy during WWII before he and his friend John Gunkelman, eventually developed and built West Acres mall which opened in 1972 Bill and Anna Jane’s daughter Marjorie Anne Marjorie Schlossman (1944-) became a local artist who frequently has her work displayed in West Acres mall and is a prominent supporter of Artist Alley in the mall and frequently has her work displayed at the Robert’s Street Chapel and married Herbert Ludwig in 1965.
