Biography

Anson Northup was born on January 4, 1817 in Conewango, New York. At the age of nine, he left and went to work on his uncles farm and then at 14 he started work on a canal boat on the Erie canal. On August 22, 1838 he married Betsey Jane Edwards and soon left for the west, living in Ohio for a time. In 1839, he drove cattle through Wisconsin to the St. Croix river. His son, Charles the II was the first white child born in St. Croix Falls.

In 1844, Anson moved the family to Stillwater, Minnesota, where he first conducted the first hotel in the area. In 1851, Anson and the family moved to St. Anthony Falls and built another hotel.
