Biographical / Historical
Irenaus Ignace Chalimonczyk (later changed his first name to Eric 1957) was born in Poland on January 26, 1926. When the Second World War erupted, Russian soldiers took control of Eric’s village in 1939. It remained under Soviet control until 1941 when Germany attacked. Eric and many of his friends found themselves conscripted and forced to work in a German labor camp. At the end of the war, unable to locate any surviving family, Eric accepted an offer from the International Red Cross to emigrate to the United States. Eric emigrated to Aberdeen SD, as a Displaced Person and became a naturalized citizen in 1957.
In Aberdeen, Eric attended and graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital as a Radiological Technician. He married Donna Ackerman in 1952, and in 1956, he and Donna moved to Fargo, ND when Eric was hired to manage a radiology department at a local clinic. Eric is survived by his wife Donna and children, Tanya, Paula and Mark, granddaughter Jennifer, and great-grandchildren Gage, Abigail, and Lily. Eric passed away on January 7, 2020, at age 94.
