 Collection
Identifier: Mss 303

Scope and Contents

These Rebekah Assembly Records document the activities of the organization from 1949-1992, though most of the material is from the 1970s and 1980s. It complements an earlier donation processed as Mss 150. The majority of the collection concerns the organization, financial standing, and yearly status of the club. The collection is comprised of eight series: Bylaws, Organization, Correspondence, Reports, Membership, Subject, Proceedings, and Records. The Bylaws series consists of the organization’s bylaws, written in 1967 and reprinted in 1979. The second series, Organization, consists of the Assembly’s guidelines and procedures. The contents of the third series, Correspondence, include two letters written to the Assembly. One is from the national association regarding a float in the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California. The other acknowledges receipt of a donation. The fourth series, Reports, is comprised of the reports relating to the organization. The president’s annual reports regarding the Assembly’s standing from 1967-1989 are included, though some years are missing. Additionally, year-end financial reports of the organization from 1969-1986 are present as well. The fifth series, Membership, is comprised of the directories of the Assembly. Directories from the years 1965, 1968, 1973, 1988, and 1989 are included. The sixth series is the Subject series. Found here are programs for various events from 1972-1992, initiation forms, and documents relating to special ceremonies and memorials. Additionally, there is a small scrapbook made up of newspaper clippings, presumably involving members and their families.

The seventh series, Proceedings, consists of annual editions of the Journal of Proceedings of the Rebekah Assembly of North Dakota, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. These are staple-bound publications, and are from years 1979-1980, 1983-1984, and 1986-1990. The final series, Subject Files, is comprised of five entry books relating to the Assembly’s activities. Included is an undated meeting minutes book, two volumes containing miscellaneous information, a ledger, and the roll call for gatherings from 1951-1985.

History

The Ivy Lodge of the Rebekah Assembly is the women's auxiliary to the fraternal lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The lodge was organized in Fargo on April 18, 1890 as the Mooreland Lodge No. 9. The first officers of the lodge were Mattie Ehrman as Noble Grand (president), Mrs. R. Ilin as vice grand, Mattie J. Monson as recording secretary, Mrs. G. A. Clark as financial secretary, and Mrs. J. Gordon as treasurer. On May 15, 1890 the lodge members voted to change their name to Ivy Lodge No. 1. As an auxiliary to a fraternal order, the Ivy Lodge devoted most of its time to social activities. However, at various times it was involved in charitable activities of benefit to the community. In 1890 the lodge established a Relief Committee to aid the needier families among its members. During the First and Second World Wars the lodge helped in the Red Cross war relief efforts. In 1924 and for several years afterwards the Ivy Lodge took part in the annual Pilgrimage to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D. C. In 1925 Ivy Lodge began to make contributions to the Odd Fellows Home in Devils Lake, N.D. for retired Odd Fellow members. In 1928 the lodge started to donate to the Educational Foundation for Women, a program to extend financial aid to college women. In 1950 the Lodge contributed to the United Nation's People-to-People program by sending books overseas. In 1963 the Lodge contributed to the construction and funding of the Odd Fellows Eye Bank and Research Center. Also in that year they sent funds toward the establishment of the Schuyler Colfax Memorial Center which houses the records of the Odd Fellows order. In 1964 the Ivy Lodge dedicated a gate at the International Peace Gardens. Presently the main activities of the lodge have been with the educational foundation, the eye research center, and with the Odd Fellows Home.
