Scope and Contents

The Herman M. Eisenlohr Papers consist of two volumes of his livery stable operation in Larimore, N.D. and some business related papers. The Livery Record Series volumes cover the period April 1, 1912 to July 26, 1919. The volumes include information such as customer’s name, residence, destination, name of horse, kind of rig, time out, and in, and charges. The ledgers are quite complete for most of the period. The Business Papers... Series file includes several letters, receipt, completed State of North Dakota Tuberculin test chart, letter head paper, and calling card. See more

Biography

Herman Mathias Eisenlohr was born January 4, 1879 at Story City, Iowa, the son of German immigrant parents Mathias and Jane (Gross) Eisenlohr. He grew up in Iowa and later farmed and raised stock. In 1906 he moved to Day County, South Dakota and farmed one year. Upon his return to Story City, Iowa, he married Anna Olsen on February 27, 1907. They farmed at Havana, North Dakota. Their daughter Florence was born in 1908. On July 24, 1909... Mrs. Eisenlohr died on the farm in Havana. Mr. Eisenlohr thereupon sold his farm and enrolled in the Grand Rapids Veterinary College at Grand Rapids, Michigan, from which he graduated in 1912. With the death of the veterinarian at Larimore, North Dakota, Mr. Eisenlohr began his practice there in 1912. He remained there also engaging in farming and operating a livery stable. He died at Larimore on April 11, 1954. Mr. Eisenlohr was a member of the Masons, Odd Fellows, Modern Woodmen, A.O.U.W., North Dakota Live Stock Sanitary Commission, and the North Dakota Veterinary Association. See more
