Biography
William Joshua Clapp was born November, 28 1857 in Montgomery, Vermont (some sources say Wakefield, Massachusetts). He was the son of George and Harriet (Fuller) Clapp. He received his education at the Vermont Seminary in Montpelier. He married Susan Alice Stevens on August 10, 1882 in Montgomery. They had three children, Hattie, Fanny and Henry.
The Clapp’s moved to Tower City, Dakota Territory in 1884, where he opened a law practice. He participated in the 1889 North Dakota Constitutional Convention. He served as Cass County Superintendent of School, and then was appointed as Superintendent of Public Instruction for North Dakota. After that, he opened a law practice in Fargo. He lived in Fargo until his death on August 28, 1934.
