History
The Agricultural Extension Service wasn’t officially born until the passage of the Smith-Lever Act in 1914. But extension activities had already been ongoing for many years. The North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station was established in 1890 “to promote efficient production, marketing distribution and utilization of products of farm as essential to health and welfare of our peoples….” Horace Stockbridge was the extension director as well as the president of NDAC. The emphasis was on programs that would directly benefit the farmers of the state. As part of the extension service, the Farmers Institute provided educational programs on a variety of topics. These programs were held throughout the state.
