Fargo (N.D.) Historical Collection

 Collection
Identifier: Mss 414

Scope and Contents

The materials in this vertical file (the collection is currently stored in filing cabinets) are an eclectic collection of documents that have some connection to Fargo’s history and institutions. The files are arranged alphabetically by topic or name. In some cases certain categories are grouped together under broader headings, such as businesses, churches, schools, etc. There is no complete consistency in how file headings were established and no attempt has been made to provide complete consistency. Files will vary in the amount and the type of materials present. The most common types of documents include newspaper clippings, newsletters, pamphlets, brochures, programs, and articles. An item-level listing is available in the Institute research room for some of the files, although this is no longer kept current.

Biographical / Historical

This collection had its origins in the mid-1950s at the Institute. Likely the accumulation of individual Fargo-related historical documents at the Institute led to the establishment of a vertical file system to organize these many single items that had Fargo as their commonality. Over time the collection grew, reflecting material that were either donated or found within individual accessions. Although its current growth is minimal, new items and categories are occasionally added to the collection. Material and files may also be withdrawn if a more appropriate disposition can be made of the items. This would occur when the Institute receives the records of organizations for which a file had earlier been established.
